Today on my facebook, Susan G. Komen for the Cure asked who my “survivor or co-survivor” was.
Susan. You of all people should know that NOT EVERY BREAST CANCER STORY HAS A HAPPY ENDING. I DON’T HAVE A SURVIVOR.
This is, in a nutshell, my issue with most breast cancer “awareness” campaigns: they make it sound more like breast cancer is some kind of sorority you can join, or a badge of honor you can wear, while downplaying the devastation it can cause. It’s a disease, OK? It’s not a club. All this awareness is, after all, supposed to help people to PREVENT GETTING IT.
